Diagnosis - Mastitis Obliterans
- Note the preservation of a cytologically benign ductal epithelium with a normal complement of peripheral myoepithelial cells
- The images show two stages of this inflammatory condition believed to be related to duct ectasia:
- An earlier phase characterised by a mixed chronic inflammatory cell infiltrate within the lumen
- A later phase characterised by fibrous obliteration of the duct lumen
- In some instances the sclerotic process includes actively proliferating granulation tissue and hyperelastosis which narrows and may totally occlude ducts (Rosen) - see image below:
